Dentons strengthens Regulatory practice with hire of Balázs Csuday, former Ambassador of Hungary

4 September 2017 – Dentons has strengthened its platform in Hungary with the recruitment of Balázs Csuday, former Ambassador of Hungary, as Senior Counsel. He has joined Dentons’ Regulatory practice in Budapest, and will substantially enhance Dentons’ capabilities in public affairs, statutory compliance, and regulation.

Csuday has considerable experience in representing and advising the most senior levels of the Hungarian Government, Hungarian and multinational corporations, and the European Union, in various international contexts. He was previously Director, Public Sector and Government Relations, at PwC in Budapest. Prior to that, he served in the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary with the Permanent Mission of Hungary to the UN and Other International Organizations in Vienna. Also, as ambassador, he was responsible for opening the Hungarian Embassy in Quito, Ecuador.

Csuday was educated at the Faculty of Law at Eötvös Loránd University, the Diplomatic Academy of Complutense University in Madrid, and the School of Law at Fordham University, New York.

István Réczicza, Hungary Managing Partner at Dentons, said, “It is a pleasure and an honor to welcome Balázs Csuday to our team. His experience at the highest level of international regulatory development and public affairs adds considerable weight and experience to our capabilities in these areas. His appointment also underlines the contribution of our Budapest office to the legal environment in Hungary and across the entire region.”

Dentons’ Budapest office recently received the IFLR National Law Firm of the Year Award for Hungary – for the second year running – at the IFLR European Awards, shortly after the firm was named ‘Europe Law Firm of the Year’ at the Chambers Europe Awards.

Dentons to combine with leading Scottish law firm Maclay Murray & Spens

Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, announced today that it is to combine with leading Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spens. The combination, which is expected to complete later in 2017 following approval by the partnerships of both firms, will offer clients the services of around 800 fee earners in the UK, including 200 partners, operating from offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Milton Keynes and Watford. Dentons will have around 8,700 lawyers and professionals.

“This combination will significantly enhance our scale and capabilities in the UK,” said Dentons’ Global Chief Executive Officer Elliott Portnoy. “Combining with strong, independent and well-established firms is central to Dentons’ ‘in and of the community’ ethos, and with its rich history in the Scottish market Maclay Murray & Spens fits very much into this category. Following soon after our recent combinations with equally high-quality firms in Latin America and the Netherlands, this development accelerates Dentons’ momentum as we continue our journey ‘from largest to leading.'”

“Maclay Murray & Spens is a Scottish leader in some of our strongest practices and sectors including Financial Services, Energy, Transport & Infrastructure, and Real Estate,” said Jeremy Cohen, Chief Executive Officer for Dentons’ UK and Middle East region. “By combining we will also significantly increase our out-of-London capability. Working seamlessly with colleagues in London, our Milton Keynes and Watford offices already enable us to deliver enhanced value to many of our largest clients. This combination will upscale that ability by a very considerable margin.”

“Joining forces with the world’s largest law firm is tremendously exciting for us,” said Kenneth Shand, Chief Executive Officer of Maclay Murray & Spens. “With offices across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific, Dentons will unquestionably be the only significant player in Scotland which is a genuinely global firm. We will have a unique ability to offer Scottish businesses with international ambitions access to the largest array of legal talent in the world, and international firms with an interest in Scotland, the resources of one of the world’s most innovative and forward-thinking law firms.”

“Our vision is to offer clients the ‘law firm of the future’ now,” said Dentons’ Global Chairman Joe Andrew. “By enhancing our ability to serve national and multi-national clients in the UK, the world’s second largest legal market, and continuing to innovate in client service delivery, Dentons continues to set the pace in the global legal market.”

Dentons strengthens market-leading position in Central Asia with the expansion of the Tashkent office

3 July 2017 – Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, has announced the expansion of its office in Tashkent, Uzbekistan through a combination with highly ranked Uzbek firm Avent Advokat. Eldor Mannopov, the founder and managing partner of Avent Advokat, has joined the Firm along with a team of nine lawyers. The move, which comes shortly after Dentons’ entry into Georgia, further strengthens the Firm’s market leadership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Central Asia.

Aigoul Kenjebayeva, Central Asia Regional Managing Partner, commented, “Dentons’ Tashkent office has been operating successfully on the Uzbekistan market for almost 20 years, largely thanks to the professionalism of Counsel Mouborak Kambarova. By joining forces with Avent Advokat, this office will become one of the top legal practices and the undisputed leader in Uzbekistan.  This will allow us to support our clients’ growing needs across the region better.”

“The recently elected Uzbek leaders have implemented a wide and ambitious program to eradicate corruption and create a more favorable environment for businesses and investors.  These reforms are giving impetus to foreign investment, and a number of our multinational clients are now seeking quality legal advice in that emerging market,” said Tomasz Dąbrowski, Chief Executive Officer of Dentons Europe.

Eldor Mannopov has been appointed Uzbekistan Managing Partner. A highly ranked lawyer in business law, he focuses on international trade, arbitration, M&A, tax, litigation and compliance and is especially respected as a market-leader lawyer specializing in construction matters.  He is also well known for his experience working with Chinese and other Asian clients.

Eldor Mannopov commented, “We are excited to join the world’s largest law firm. We look forward to collaborating actively with our colleagues from across Central Asia and around the globe with world-class client service and value.”

The Tashkent office provides full service business law advice in energy, banking and finance, corporate, M&A, infrastructure and PPP, technology and construction.  The team serves clients in English, Russian, Uzbek and Turkish.

“We have been exploring ways to strengthen our current operations in Tashkent, and so we are delighted to welcome one of Uzbekistan’s top legal teams to our Firm. With the addition of the new team, we will be able to offer our clients a wide range of quality services on both local and foreign law in Uzbekistan,” remarked Evan Lazar, Chairman of the Board of Dentons Europe.

Dentons is the only global law firm which, in addition to its vast collaboration of offices worldwide, is able to offer full coverage services in Central Asia and the neighboring countries, particularly in Uzbekistan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia, and via associated firms in Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

CETA

The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will create jobs, strengthen economic relations and boost Canada’s trade with the world’s second-largest market. CETA is a progressive free trade agreement which covers virtually all sectors and aspects of Canada-EU trade in order to eliminate or reduce barriers. For example, prior to CETA’s entry into force, only 25 percent of EU tariff lines on Canadian goods were duty-free. Upon CETA’s entry into force, the EU will remove tariffs on 98 percent of its tariff lines. Once CETA is fully implemented, the EU will have eliminated tariffs on 99 percent of its tariff lines.
